This tour is ideal if you want to visit picturesque, history-filled cities with ancient universities and fantastic architecture.
Tour of Oxford & Cambridge
Often ranked one of the best cities to live in the UK, Oxford is certainly one of the best to visit. There was once a time in history when the name “Oxford” referred only to the famous university itself, but today, Oxford is a city in it’s own right, a cosmopolitan hub of history, learning, culture and green spaces. The golden stone buildings of the ancient university, founded in the 1100s are the oldest in the world, with their spires, towers and domes.
Oxford has been regularly used as a filming location for Inspector Morse TV series and Harry Potter movies. In fact, the Great Hall at Christ Church College inspired the dining hall at Hogwarts and the famous Bodleian Library with its collection of ancient chained books served as inspiration for the school of wizardry’s own library.
With it’s exquisite architecture, exuding history and tradition, Cambridge is an extraordinary university town. The tightly packed core of ancient colleges, the picturesque riverside ‘Backs’ (college gardens) and the leafy green meadows surrounding the city give it a more tranquil appeal than Oxford. Cambridge has numerous good quality restaurants, pubs and cafes to enjoy. There is a vibrant night life, with live music venues such as the Cambridge Corn Exchange plus many smaller cafes and pubs.
The town also has a great deal to offer both the casual and serious shopper, with five shopping centres and a large open market square, off which radiates many little side streets and alleyways full of unique and unusual shops.
